What Postpartum Depression Really Looks Like
Motherhood brings many changes, and sometimes it's hard to know what's ‘normal’ and when you might benefit from some additional support. Here are some common experiences that can signal it's time to reach out for postpartum therapy:
You're feeling overwhelmed, insecure, in awe, exhausted, anxious...wondering if you're doing this right, wondering when it's going to get easier, wondering when you can just rest.
You're feeling angry, sad, irritable, overwhelmed, constantly fighting with your partner, but assume it's all normal and expected in early motherhood so you just keep taking it one day at a time and hope it gets better.
You feel like you're losing yourself and need to find some space to stay connected with who you are outside of mothering.
You are not enjoying motherhood and don’t understand why you feel this way.
You are depleted and need a self-care plan.
You've heard about 'postpartum depression' but honestly you feel a bit scared to look into it, because if you have 'postpartum depression' you worry that means you're not a good mom.
The birthing experience was.....magical, traumatic, baffling, terrible, ecstatic, humbling, empowering....and you need a sacred space to integrate and honor the process of bringing life into the world.
You keep thinking about your parents and how you were raised, the challenges and the blessings, the hurts and the gifts, and you're wondering how it all impacts you now that you're a mom.
You're feeling overwhelmed with all the parenting blogs, posts, books and advice and want to develop and trust your own mama intuition.
We see you. We hear you. You are not alone.
With loving care and support, you can and will feel like yourself again.
We can help.

Common Types of Postpartum Challenges
Postpartum Depression (PPD)
More than just ‘baby blues,’ PPD can feel like a weighted blanket that you can’t escape. You might find yourself feeling numb or disconnected from your baby, overwhelmed by sadness, or struggling with unexpected anger and rage. These feelings aren't your fault, they're often related to hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the massive life adjustment that comes with motherhood.
Postpartum Anxiety (PPA)
While some worry is expected as a new mom, postpartum anxiety can feel like your mind is stuck in overdrive and an endless loop of ‘what-ifs.’ You might find yourself constantly scanning for danger, unable to rest even when you have the chance, or experiencing intrusive thoughts that feel scary and embarrassing..
Postpartum Stress
Sometimes called ‘postpartum overwhelm,’ this manifests as a constant state of feeling stretched too thin. It's the weight of endless responsibilities, the pressure to ‘do it all,’ and the exhaustion of constantly putting everyone else's needs before your own.
Postpartum Rage
One of the most surprising and least discussed postpartum experiences, rage can feel scary and shameful, but it's more common than you might think! This intense anger often arises for no apparent ‘reason’, and can leave you feeling guilty, confused and like a ‘bad mom’. Often, rage is a signal that your boundaries are being crossed, your needs aren't being met, or you're carrying too heavy a load. It doesn’t mean you are broken or not doing this motherhood thing ‘right.’ Postpartum rage is an SOS asking for your attention, deep care and support.
Birth Trauma Healing
Sometimes birth doesn't go as planned (to put it mildly), leaving you with feelings of fear, disappointment, or trauma. Whether you experienced medical complications, felt unsupported during delivery, or simply felt overwhelmed by the intensity of birth, these experiences can deeply impact your transition into motherhood. Healing from birth trauma is possible with gentle, trauma-informed support that honors both your physical and emotional experience.
Important Note About Other Postpartum Experiences While we've names some of the most common postpartum challenges above, some mothers may experience other forms of postpartum distress, including Postpartum Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Postpartum Panic Disorder, Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Postpartum Psychosis. These experiences, while intense and sometimes frightening, are treatable with proper support.
If you're experiencing thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, seeing or hearing things others don't, or feeling severely confused or disconnected from reality, please seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of postpartum psychosis, a rare but serious condition requiring urgent care. You can call 988 for immediate support, or go to your nearest emergency room.

This approach helps regulate your nervous system, enhance bonding with your baby, and restore a sense of safety in your body after birth.
-
Psychodynamic Therapy for Postpartum Depression
Understand how your past experiences, including your own relationship with your mother, influence your current experience of motherhood. This deeper work helps heal generational patterns of being in the world. and supports you in creating the kind of motherhood experience you want to have, even if it's different from what you experienced growing up.

Remember: Having these feelings doesn't mean you're failing as a mother. They're signs that your system needs and deserves support. The key difference between baby blues and postpartum depression lies in timing, duration, and intensity. Here's how to understand what you might be experiencing:
Baby Blues:
Typically begin within days of birth
Peak around day 5
Naturally resolve within two weeks
Include mood swings, tearfulness, and feeling overwhelmed
Allow you to still have moments of joy and connection
Often lift with rest and support
Postpartum Depression:
Can begin anytime in the first year
Lasts longer than two weeks
Feels more intense and persistent
Makes it hard to function or care for yourself/baby
Often includes feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness
Doesn't tend to improve with rest alone
May include thoughts of harm to self or baby
If you're beyond the two-week mark and still struggling, or if your feelings are intense enough to interfere with daily life at any point, it's time to reach out for support. There's no need to wait and see if things get better—early support can make a significant difference in your healing journey.
Trust your intuition here. If something feels off, even if you can't quite name it, that's enough reason to reach out for support. You deserve to feel well and supported during this sacred transition into motherhood.

The postpartum period can bring various emotional and psychological challenges that, while challenging, are also treatable. While you might hear these collectively called ‘postpartum depression,’ there's actually a spectrum of experiences that new mothers might face:
Baby Blues
Affecting up to 80% of new mothers, the ‘baby blues’ typically appear within the first few days after birth and last about two weeks. These feelings of tearfulness, overwhelm, and mood swings are related to normal hormonal changes and the adjustment to motherhood.Postpartum Depression (PPD)
More intense and longer-lasting than baby blues, PPD can emerge anytime in the first year. It often includes feelings of sadness, hopelessness, disconnection from your baby, and difficulty enjoying things that once brought you pleasure. While hormonal changes play a role, PPD can also be influenced by lack of support, sleep deprivation, and the massive life adjustment that motherhood brings.Postpartum Anxiety (PPA)
Sometimes occurring alongside depression or on its own, PPA involves excessive worry, racing thoughts, and constant feelings of dread. Many mothers experience intrusive thoughts about harm coming to their baby—while scary, these thoughts are common and treatable.Postpartum OCD
Characterized by intrusive thoughts or images (often about harm coming to the baby) and compulsive behaviors to prevent these feared outcomes. While these thoughts can feel terrifying, they're actually a sign that your mind is trying to protect your baby, albeit in an overwhelming way.Birth-Related PTSD
Following a difficult or traumatic birth experience, some mothers develop symptoms of PTSD, including flashbacks, avoidance of birth-related topics, heightened anxiety, and feeling constantly on alert. This is a natural response to an overwhelming experience and can be healed with proper support.Important Note: If you're experiencing thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, or if you're having hallucinations or severe confusion, these could be signs of postpartum psychosis—a rare but serious condition requiring immediate medical attention. Please contact emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room for immediate support.
Remember: These experiences don't reflect your worth as a mother or your ability to care for your baby. They're temporary conditions that respond well to support and treatment. Whether you're experiencing mild symptoms or more severe challenges, reaching out for help is a sign of strength and love for both yourself and your baby. Schedule a free consultation call today to learn more about working with one of our postpartum therapists.

The weight of mom guilt and constant overwhelm isn't just emotionally exhausting, it can rob you of the joy and feel good emotions of motherhood. These heavy feelings often stem from deeply ingrained beliefs about what makes a ‘good mother,’ unrealistic societal expectations, and the profound identity shift that comes with motherhood.
Postpartum therapy offers a sacred space to:
Understand the deeper roots of your guilt and overwhelm
Release perfectionist patterns that keep you exhausted
Learn to trust your maternal instincts
Create sustainable boundaries that honor both you and your family
Transform self-criticism into self-compassion
Develop practical tools for managing overwhelming moments
Reconnect with your authentic self while embracing your new role as mother
At The Holistic Counseling Center, we understand that healing from mom guilt requires more than just positive thinking, it needs a holistic approach that honors your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. Our postpartum therapists blend evidence-based techniques with spiritual wisdom to help you find your ground in motherhood. Together, we'll help you access your inner knowing, nurture your nervous system, and create a motherhood experience that feels authentic and sustainable.
Remember: The presence of guilt often signals a deeper concern for your child's wellbeing. Let's transform that concern into confident, conscious mothering that serves both you and your baby.
-
